F1 | Alpine, Fernando Alonso: “I expected more, but the points will be awarded tomorrow”
The Asturian finishes qualifying in tenth place and responds to Albon's complaints
Fernando Alonso makes it and passes the cut for Q3, placing himself in the top ten. The Spaniard narrowly makes the cut for Q2 with the twelfth fastest time, after a long run in the last attempt that left Alpine in suspense. Alonso himself found himself at the center of controversy, in particular from Alex Albon, due to the traffic on the last attempt in Q1, where everyone had tires and brakes not up to temperature and with the time on the clock at the limit. In any case, the French team saw Esteban Ocon excluded in the second qualifying heat, with Alonso playing for everything in Q3. In the end Fernando is only tenth and will start from the fifth row with the other world champion Sebastian Vettel.
"I'm very happy with this day, although perhaps we would have expected more after the pace shown yesterday. We seem to have lost a bit of that competitiveness today, we will have to understand why – said the Asturian – there was a lot of frustration for everyone at the end of Q1 and I understand some of the complaints, but several cars made mistakes which caused yellow flags, the brakes and tires were no longer up to temperature and everyone was trying to get track position . We also saw some riders hit the wall and when I went long on the escape route I couldn't do much. It will still be a complicated match, anything can happen in Baku. The points will be won tomorrow and I can't wait to understand what we can do, especially with a car like this".
