F1 | Alpine, Fernando Alonso still competitive: “I'm optimistic”
"We can do more, but we seem fast on this track" added the Asturian, fifth in free practice

If the A522 were as constant as the driver who drives it, then Fernando Alonso would be up front competing for the world championship. The Asturian driver was forced to retire twice, and saw his race ruined in Australia, despite the excellent performances he managed to bring to the track on all occasions. Even in Miami, Fernando did not deny himself, and still looks like that kid who drove the Renault: the second session saw him finish in fifth position - in FP1 he had stopped in twelfth position. Free practice was therefore positive for the French team, with Esteban Ocon not far from his teammate in ninth position.

"It was a good day for us, we studied the circuit by comparing the simulator data with the real track. There are some differences – explained the two-time world champion – so today the objective was to know and understand the route thoroughly. It's an interesting track and I think our Friday was positive. There's a lot of data to analyze now, and it's clear we can all do so much more. We have to continue working on the car, smoothing out the details; we look very fast again this weekend and I think we are in a great position, I'm optimistic".
