The Frenchman was ninth in Qatar, while Alonso managed to get into fifth position
Esteban Ocon manages to make the cut for Q3, qualifying in Qatar in ninth position. The Frenchman will start from the fifth row next to Sebastian Vettel's Aston Martin, both of which will be fitted with soft tyres. Good qualifying by Alpine, which tries to keep up with AlphaTauri, and in fact Fernando Alonso, fifth, will visibly tag Pierre Gasly in the second row, while Ocon will immediately have to attack Yuki Tsunoda, eighth on the grid. The two teams are currently equal on points and are competing for fifth place in the constructors' championship.
"Really positive qualifying for the team, with me and Fernando in Q3. As far as I'm concerned, we missed something today and we have some things to review to understand our shortcomings and where we can improve – Esteban explained – there was probably still room for improvement, because in Q3 I went wide in Turn 1 to try to make up time. In any case, we are at the bottom of Q3, which is great, but we know that the points are awarded on Sunday. We are still fighting and we will fight to score points in the race".
