F1 | Alpine, Alonso: “I have never stopped loving this category”

World Endurance Championship (a championship title and two editions of the 24 hours of Le Mans won with Toyota), 24 hours of Daytona, Indy 500, Dakar; Fernando Alonso has put on a show in recent years, confirming himself as an old-fashioned, versatile racer, a Michel Vaillant in the flesh, capable of jumping from one type of racing car to another, always remaining competitive. An eclecticism that is the litmus test of an immense class.

Yet the Spanish driver, despite his two-year absence from F1, admitted that he has never stopped loving the top category. The choice to leave at the end of 2018 was dictated by the need to try his hand at other motorsport disciplines, to try new competitions, also considering the impossibility of being competitive in F1. Then came the call from Renault (Alpine), "his" team, the team with which he won two world championships. And Alonso returned more energized than before, immediately rediscovering the feeling with the premier category.

“I have never stopped loving Formula 1, but unfortunately at a certain point I felt like I was wasting time, wasting other opportunities in my career, I thought it was right to try other categories – the words of the Spanish driver to Beyond the Grid – Given how 2017 and 2018 went, perhaps I could have left even earlier, but I was holding out hope that McLaren would grow, you never know beforehand. I think at that moment I needed new, different challenges. I wanted to compete in different categories and test myself against specialists from other disciplines. I had the privilege of being able to return to F1 when I felt like it."
