F1 | Alonso close to rallying: “I want to do something unprecedented”
"Whatever the next adventure is, I will only do it if I have a chance of winning"
After the victory at 24 Hours of Daytona, the two-time world champion has expressed his desire to try his hand at a category he has never tried before.
The main goal of Fernando Alonso is to win the Triple Crown (which could happen if he wins the Indianapolis 500 next May); however, the Spaniard already has other events in mind.
“At the moment the focus is on Indianapolis but I'm thinking of trying other disciplines that aren't held exclusively on circuits”.
The Dakar Rally is a two-week event covering almost nine thousand kilometers and could be one of the events Alonso can consider. Nasser Al-Attiyah, who took his third win earlier this month, revealed that Alonso is planning to test his Toyota Hilux.
Alonso drives for Toyota in the World Endurance Championship. At the moment there has been no official confirmation of an upcoming test but he does not rule out participation in events in which he will be able to have his say:
“I have to think, I have to plan, I need to make sure I am competitive, that I have the right people and teams, as well as good preparation. Whatever adventure is next, I won't do it if I'm not competitive or have a chance of winning. The goal is to do something unprecedented in motorsport”.
