F1 | Alonso returns to the choice to embrace the McLaren Honda project: "Nine out of ten drivers would have followed that path"

When asked about the choice to embrace McLaren's plan in 2015, Fernando Alonso specified how the project carried out by Honda was absolutely interesting, especially after the year of free development given by the Japanese engine manufacturer in 2014.

The Spaniard, precisely in this sense, specified how nine out of ten drivers would have followed that path, given the poor performance of Ferrari's hybrid turbo V6 and the dominance of Mercedes signed by Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg. Honda, at least on paper, guaranteed an extremely substantial investment plan and a top-level technical project, aspects that would have led many riders to trust it.

Unfortunately, the reality was very different, given that the Japanese power unit did not prove to be successful, but the Spaniard specified that it was impossible to predict the disastrous years of 2015 and 2016.

Here are the words of Fernando Alonso: “I think that in Formula 1 there is always only one winner. Personally I've been unlucky in some races, but it's difficult to make predictions without a crystal ball. It's easy to say it now, but when I joined Ferrari in 2010, I think all the drivers would have gone in that direction."

On the choice to go to McLaren he added: “The same goes for McLaren, given that in 2014 everyone spoke highly of their project. Ferrari's turbo engine wasn't up to the task and Honda arrived in Formula 1 after a year of virtually limitless development. On paper it was an excellent decision and I believe that nine out of ten riders would have followed that path."

“I don't regret many things and I'm actually happy with some decisions”, he continued. “Only one driver is happy in Formula 1 and his name is Lewis Hamilton. Being second or seventh makes little difference as far as I'm concerned. I won two championships and achieved many podiums, goals that talented people have never managed to achieve."

“They were probably all unlucky, but that's how it works in Formula 1. I started in karting and became champion twice, so I have no regrets"he concluded.
