F1 | Alonso and the journalists' questions: "First they asked me about Ferrari, now about Toro Rosso..."
The Spaniard does not mask his disappointment at McLaren's failures: "It's sad not to be able to satisfy our people"
It is a Fernando Alonso sincere what to the Spanish newspaper El Pais he expressed his bitterness at the impossibility of McLaren to fight for the top. After three disastrous years alongside Honda, the Woking team, by virtue of the new Renault collaboration, hoped to be able to narrow the gap to the top teams in a short time: at this start of the championship, however, the gap from Mercedes, Ferrari and Red Bull remained largely unchanged from the 2017 finale. “We can't give the people at McLaren the results they want and this makes us sad. Personally, I always try to give my best, but it's clear that we need to make steps forward." – admitted the two-time world champion.
Often accused of having made bad choices during his career, Alonso later complained of constant questions about Ferrari, former Asturian team, and Toro Rosso, new partner of the little appreciated Honda: “Talking about a team after a good qualifying or a good race is simple. After every victory, every podium they conquer, I am asked if I regret leaving Ferrari. Now, after Mercedes won everything for four years, they no longer ask me about Ferrari, but about Toro Rosso." – Alonso commented to the German newspaper Speed Week.
