F1 | Alonso after the victory at Daytona: “I'm very proud”

The Spanish driver said he was particularly proud of his team with which he achieved triumph at the 24 Hours of Daytona, praising his teammates Jordan Taylor, Renger van der Zande and Kamui Kobayashi, for their performances.

Fernando Alonso, announced his retirement from Formula 1 at the end of last season, although he admitted he could return in the future.

Since December, he began preparing for Daytona with the team WTR extension (Wayne Taylor Racing).

The race ended with a red flag due to extreme weather conditions, but Alonso's skill in the rain once again proved vital, as at one point he set lap times at least three seconds faster than anyone else on the grid.

“I'm very, very proud of the work we did today, even though it wasn't a one-day effort but a month-long effort -said the Spaniard a GrandPrix247- in fact a December we started preparing for the race and getting all the documents on how the Cadillac works and how the Wayne Taylor Racing team works, some procedures that maybe are different than other teams.

“Kamui and I tried to integrate immediately, trying to learn as much as possible from the Roar team and then, in the race, it was very, very difficult. Conditions changed often and sometimes it was a shock.”

Alonso is referring to the difficult conditions in which the race took place, with extremely dangerous precipitation at several points during the race. The red flag has been highlighted several times.

“You had to survive every lap. It wasn't about lap times or anything like that. It was about crossing the finish line, putting the lap together and in the end it worked.

“I think the last five or seven laps of the race were, I think, not right for anyone who was on the track because the visibility was almost zero. I called the team for a safety car because I couldn't see anything. It's a shame we didn't race the whole race, but we drove night and day, in dry and wet conditions, so I think we deserve all this."
