The Alfa Romeo team principal analyzes how the cost cap will influence the work of the teams

F1 | Alfa Romeo, Vasseur: “The cost cap will have a lesser impact on us”

Starting next season, Formula 1 will introduce a cost containment system, with a pre-established budget that the teams will have to respect in order not to incur particularly severe penalties. A system aimed above all at making the Circus's business model more sustainable, but also at helping teams with fewer resources, who saw themselves clashing with teams that managed to spend even double, with obvious disparities in terms of results and opportunities .

However, the budget cap will not have the same effect on all teams, as the top teams will have to deal with cuts to fit within the cost cap, while other teams will still be below the expected level, as is Alfa Romeo Racing: “The cost cap will have a lesser impact on us, as we were and are below the budget level foreseen with the cost cap. The main difference for us will be the better distribution of prizes in economic terms and the fact that the new cars from 2022 will be cheaper. But we are still far from making a real profit. It is certainly a step forward, but we want more, we will work for this,” Frederic Vasseur told Auto Motor und Sport during an interview.

What the smaller teams hope is that with the budget cap there can be a leveling of performance: “The reduction of the budget will be a big challenge for the top teams rather than for the smaller teams. With stable regulations, we will see a leveling off of performance. But I don't expect us to be ahead of Mercedes or Ferrari from 2022. But it will certainly be easier for us than the top teams to manage the situation with the cost cap,” added Vasseur.
