F1 | Abiteboul does not rule out a future in Formula 1 for Hyundai

The Monte Carlo Rally represents the first public outing of Cyril Abiteboul as the new team principal of Hyundai. The French manager, after his experience at the head of Renault's sports management in Formula 1, started again from this new professional experience and, following a specific question asked by the media, underlined that at the moment there are no other interests in motorsport for the Japanese company other than to participate and win in the World Rally Championship.

However, Abiteboul did not rule out a possible entry into Formula 1 by Hyundai, but at the same time he specified how these dynamics must reflect attractive interests for such an important step.

“We have no specific plans – said Abiteboul in Monte Carlo, where the WRC stage is taking place –  Of course, Hyundai is committed to global development and introducing a new and unique product line, so participation in motorsport is important to us. The Rally is our top priority at the moment. We must win and ensure that our participation is in the interest of the core business.”

Abiteboul then added: “As for Formula 1, I don't want to say yes because there will be headlines straight away that Hyundai is going to Formula 1. First we need to make sure it is in the best interest of the company to be in a category.”
