Are F-duct systems returning to Formula 1?

A new case of use of F-duct systems would have already broken out in Formula 1. The problem seemed solved at the end of 2010: the FIA banned driver-activated systems and replaced them with DRS.

But towards the end of last year Mercedes began testing a passive F-duct system for the front wing, which was totally legal, informally dubbed W-duct after the shape of the ducts.

The Mercedes system was then copied by McLaren in the final test session in Barcelona.

Now there are rumors of new F-duct systems, including for the rear wing, designed by Red Bull, Mercedes, McLaren and Lotus.

When asked about the mysterious air vent on the step of the RB8, Adrian Newey replied: "I can't say anything."

“Some teams doubt the legality of these systems,” journalist Michael Schmidt said. “I heard that someone made an official request to the FIA to understand what is allowed in this area.”
