Ecclestone: “Third car in F1? Unlikely"

Bernie Ecclestone believes the approval of the proposal to field three cars for each top team put forward several times by Ferrari is unlikely.

According to the president of the Maranello company, Luca Cordero di Montezemolo, it would be convenient for the smaller teams to field customer cars supplied by the top teams.

An idea that does not seem supported by many other figures in the paddock: "When we risk losing some teams it could be a good idea" Ecclestone declared to Autosport. “But the other teams don't like it. Imagine having three Ferraris, three Red Bulls and three McLarens, it wouldn't be so good for the other teams."

The other team bosses think it is better to ensure that every team on the grid can be competitive rather than resorting to customer cars: “I think the DNA and structure of F1 requires a variety of teams. We have new teams and smaller teams and we are aware that it is very difficult to find the budget to compete in Formula 1. In my opinion it would be a detriment to the sport to see three Ferraris, three Red Bulls and three McLarens. There are pros and cons and I think it's right to talk about it. People have different opinions but at the moment I think we should focus on finding a sustainable model for all teams in F1."
