Ecclestone: “Heineken wanted a Dutch star to enter F1”
Max Verstappen's talent helped the company enter F1
Although in recent years the Formula 1 has not shone as far as sponsors are concerned, with many companies especially linked to the teams that have decided to abandon the Circus, this year Bernie Ecclestone has signed a very important agreement with the well-known Dutch beer producing brand Heineken.
In reality the contacts and the idea of entering Formula 1 were not so recent but Heineken needed a new star, a Dutch talent who could involve his entire nation who gradually abandoned interest in this sport due to the lack of both a Grand Prix in the Netherlands and a driver who could be truly competitive.
Thanks to the exploit of Max Verstappen, having become one of the strongest and most coveted drivers within the paddock, the Dutch brewer was able to continue its plan to enter Formula 1 as a sponsor, which then materialized at this season's Canadian GP. Bernie Ecclestone, patron of the Circus, also confirms this: “I believe Heineken delayed its entry into Formula 1 until it was clear that Holland had its new star".
The Dutch company will also be a sponsor of the 2016 Italian Grand Prix.
