FIA clarification on the oil used by Mercedes and Ferrari
The FIA has cleared the field of any suspicion: the lubricants used by the first in the class are legal
During the days of the Canadian GP, the FIA took the oil used by Mercedes and Ferrari, both that contained in the main tank and that of the auxiliary tank.
The purpose of the technical delegation's inspection was to verify whether the aforementioned teams used particular chemical additives in order to better "lubricate" the combustion engine by acting on the petrol (with an illegal gain in power). Article 5.14.12 of the technical regulations categorically prohibits "oiling" the engine with any external substance (only the recirculation of exhaust gases is permitted).
The report shows that no anomaly nor significant "viscosity" divergence was found between the oil contained in the main tank and that of the auxiliary tank.
“Infrared analysis showed no significant difference between the main and auxiliary tank oil in both cars. Further GC analysis showed differences between the oil in the auxiliary tank and that in the main tank. (…) From these results, it can be concluded that the auxiliary tank is not used to add additives that increase performance” csaid the Federation, dispelling any doubts about the legality of Mercedes and Ferrari lubricants.
