Caterham, van der Garde: “Fantastic day for me and the team!”
The Dutch driver achieved the third fastest time in Q1
If they had told him he probably wouldn't have believed it, but neither would the other teams. Because closing the first part of qualifying with the third best time was an unexpected result for Giedo van der Garde and for Caterham.
It matters little that we didn't manage to get into Q3, the 14th time on the grid is still a satisfactory result, especially because the Dutch driver kept the two Marussia, Williamsa Clean and even the Toro Rosso.
“It was a fantastic day and I'm really happy for the team: we managed to get into Q2 for the second time this season and kept Marussia behind”, began a visibly happy van der Garde.
“I decided to go on track with slick tires first and it was a courageous choice because in the first lap the track was still wet in several places – explained the Dutchman -. The decision didn't seem to pay off, but then in Q1, on the final lap, everything worked perfectly and I found myself third. When I heard it on the radio I couldn't believe it, it was fantastic.".
“In Q2 the track improved and probably our lap time too but not enough to get into Q3. However, we knew that we could achieve a result like this and we achieved our objective by keeping our opponents behind us. The whole team did an excellent job”he concluded.
His teammate didn't go as well Charles Pic which instead finished in last position.
