Caterham: Merhi probable replacement for Kobayashi in Monza
The Japanese could also miss the Italian GP
Caterham is considering replacing Kamui Kobayashi at Monza too. At the Belgian GP Andre Lotterer raced in place of the Japanese. The German, released by the TOM Super Formula team and Audi for just one race weekend, brought the Hype sponsor to Caterham. Now the team is thinking of offering the seat to Roberto Merhi and Carlos Sainz Jr. would also be in the running to race a GP.
However, the favorite seems to be Merhi, already present at Spa as a Caterham guest, and awaiting confirmation of the necessary budget from his Russian sponsors: “I will probably be in Monza, but nothing is certain yet. It's true that I was invited here to Spa and here I am. Caterham asked me to visit the factory and test on the simulator, which I did, they were very happy with me and offered me this opportunity."
According to rumours, Merhi will race two GPs with Caterham. He should have already raced in Belgium but the FIA did not grant him the super license for F1 as his European F3 title dates back to three years ago.
