Button: “I didn't expect to achieve much today”

If a good morning starts in the morning, for the McLaren the horizon is filling with clouds. If last year Jenson Button he started the World Championship with a victory, this year he has to settle for a ninth place and two miserable points. In Melbourne the Woking team fought all weekend and in the race Button finished almost a lap behind the winner, Kimi Raikkonen.

“There's a lot of work for us to do. It's not something we can change overnight
– declares the British pilot -. I think we did everything we could today and I don't think we will suddenly be competitive."

The former world champion also admits that ninth place was a surprising result. “I didn't expect to achieve much today – explains Button -. I think we should be happy with how we went for the race. In a way I'm a bit surprised to have beaten a Lotus and to have fought with Mark (Webber, ed.) for so long."

“I think if we get the same points next week it would already be a good result that really shows where we are. But we are McLaren and we should be higher.", closes Button.

His teammate Sergio PerezHowever, on his debut with McLaren he finished 11th and in turn admitted problems.

“We lack downforce, we lack stability… It's not just one thing. I think we have a lot of problems. The car is not fast enough and this is our reality"
, declares the Mexican driver who denies a return to last season's car, as hypothesized by some.

"It is not possible. We have to continue with our heads held high because the car has the potential. We must understand where to act, in order to fight for better positions"
, concludes Perez.
