Button: “The best victory of my career”

Jenson Button called his victory at the F1 Canadian Grand Prix the best of his career after beating Sebastian Vettel on the final lap of a truly incredible race.

Button took the lead with half a lap to go after Vettel briefly lost control of his car under pressure from the Englishman.

The McLaren driver won despite an accident with his teammate Lewis Hamilton and a contact with Fernando Alonso as well as a drive-through for speeding under the safety car.

“I really don't know what to say,” Button said. “It was truly an exciting three hours right from the start. There was an accident with Lewis, I couldn't see anything when he was next to me. I apologized to him, and it was a battle from then on. I got a penalty for speeding under the safety car so I had to recover three times. On the last lap I chased Seb, he ran wide on the wet part of the circuit and I took the opportunity. It was a fantastic race, even if I hadn't won I would still have had fun. A fantastic win, probably my best win. The last lap is what counts to be in the lead and I was in the lead for half a lap. An amazing day, I really don't know what else to say."

However, the Englishman's victory is still under investigation due to his incidents with Alonso and Hamilton: "I'm not worried because I don't feel I've done anything wrong, but you can never know the final outcome."

“I feel like I spent more time in the pits than on the track. The guys did a fantastic job with the strategy. At some point we got lucky with the strategy. They fitted me with slicks at the right time and the car worked really well in difficult conditions. I really enjoyed moving up the group, fighting is almost as good as winning the race. That feeling of beating someone. A great race for those sitting here, to be on the podium is an exceptional result and to recover from last position…It is without a doubt my best race”.

With this victory Button moved up to second place in the championship, 60 points behind Vettel.
