More controversy over exhaust blowing and mapping. New software for the single control unit is coming

Regulatory gap on exhausts in F1: the FIA takes action

The FIA will quickly close a regulatory loophole in the new rules on Formula 1 engine mapping in light of the new controversy over exhausts that broke out today in Barcelona.

As teams continue to explore the limits of the regulation, it is understood that the FIA has been alerted to how teams are trying to get around the limitations on engine maps.

The Federation's objective is to completely eliminate the aerodynamic function of exhausts.

This year the teams have been forced to adopt periscope exhausts and severe limitations on the mapping to prevent the exhausts from blowing even when the accelerator is not pressed.

Although the intervention of the FIA seemed to have solved the problem, it was learned that the Federation, prompted by an engineer, would be aware that the possibility of using maps that circumvent the bans persists.

In particular, there is the extreme possibility that some teams could use a wider than permitted throttle opening to increase the flow of exhaust gas by inducing a block.

The FIA would have studied with the engineer who exposed the problem the changes to be implemented in the next version of the standard electronic control unit (ECU) software that controls the engine mapping. The updated software will be provided to the teams before the first race in Australia.

The FIA, for the moment, has no suspicions about any team.
