Berger: Pirelli will be the right choice

Gerhard berger, with the matter now almost concluded, believes that the choice of having Pirelli as the sole supplier of Formula 1 tires for 2011 may be the best option. The news is not yet official and confirmation should arrive next week through the Federation but we find ourselves at the halfway point: Pirelli 90% will replace Bridgestone in the supply of tires for 2011.

The Italian company has thus managed to overtake its only serious opponent, the French company Michelin, which was currently a tire supplier in F1 from 2001 to 2006, winning 43 victories and 4 world titles (2 drivers + 2 constructors with Renault in 2005 -2006).

Unlike Michelin, a lot of criticism rains down on the Italian company guilty of missing from F1 since 1991 but the main problem could be the lack of time to organize all the work perfectly because 2011 is almost upon us; in favor of the Milanese company is that it has not been completely out of the motorsport world: forays into the Superbike world championship, in the world rally, current supplier of GP3 and at stake there is a contract that would see it as supplier for 2011 also regarding the GP2. Berger takes the opportunity and sides with the Italian team.

“These criticisms are nonsense. Pirelli supplies the tires for the fastest cars in the world and even in F1 there have been some glorious teams that have won with them."

For the record, Pirelli's last victory on the F1 circuits occurred at the 1991 Canadian Grand Prix with Nelson Piquet's Benetton.
