Berger: “Alonso, a complete driver. He has the killer instinct”

Gerhard Berger, former McLaren and Ferrari driver, during a recent interview with his BBC colleagues, confided how, in his opinion, Fernando Alonso will be able to win at least a world title at McLaren.

According to the Austrian, who raced for the British team between 1990 and 1992, the Spaniard, who will not be present in Australia as a precaution due to the Montmelò accident, will continue to race for at least another 3-5 yearsi: “Alonso is a complete driver, he should have won more titles because he is a great champion – commented Berger – He has the killer instinct that distinguishes great champions and has the ability to win more than two titles”. According to the 55-year-old, when he returns to the track, the Spaniard will not charge no setbacks from a physical and mental point of view: “Fernando is a rider with so much experience that he will be able to live with it, I don't think it will have any effects on him. As soon as he gets back behind the wheel will be ready to run again."

Just during the winter tests, McLaren-Honda suffered a lot reliability problems, understandable also taking into account the freshness of the Anglo-Japanese project. According to Berger, 2015 will be a year of learning and, the Spaniard knew this very well when he signed with the Woking team: “I don't think it matters if the tests didn't go as perhaps they expected. It's normal, it would have been much more surprising if Honda had been competitive right from the start – he continued – Once the learning process is complete, Alonso will want reap all the fruits. He has great talent, I'm not just talking about his skills as a driver, but also in his way of doing politics."
