Alonso: “A bit of relaxation before the next commitment at Silverstone”

Finally a moment of rest! After the weekend in Valencia I went directly to Maranello, where I spent two days full of commitments, both on the technical and promotional fronts. This morning I returned home for a few days of relaxation before leaving for the next Grand Prix, this time on English soil, at Silverstone.

With the team we analyzed the progress of the last race and the short and medium term development plans. I have fond memories of Valencia. It was a positive weekend, especially in the race. In the meantime, I filled a hole in my trophy collection but the best feeling was seeing the crowd's joy when I overtook Mark, first on the track and then at the pit stop: racing in Spain is always something special!

It's an important moment of the season. We are growing, as seen in the last three races, but now we must confirm the progress seen in Monaco, Montreal and Valencia also on a track with profoundly different characteristics, which certainly suits our main rivals better. Silverstone requires a lot of aerodynamic efficiency and this is the area in which we are further behind. We will have some news but from here to say that we will have recovered the gap... Maybe! We must be realistic and know that it is not possible that in less than two months - this is the time that has passed since the Barcelona race - we have recovered that gap that we had experienced on the Circuit de Catalunya: it was not a lap - that was the result of the progress of the race – but it was certainly not what we have seen in the last few races. We must continue to work, improve the car and I am convinced that the victory will come. When? I don't have a crystal ball to say for sure.

In Maranello I had the opportunity to meet a driver who made the history of Formula 1 and Ferrari, John Surtees. We participated in a promotional event organized by our technical partner Shell and it was very interesting to be able to talk to him, compare our experiences as drivers and, above all, be able to share our way of experiencing a special Scuderia like Ferrari. It's nice to meet certain characters, to discover from their voice what the world of Formula 1 was once like!

Today the team informed me about the choice made by Pirelli for the next three races. In the British Grand Prix we will therefore have the Soft and the Hard, the same choice that characterized the initial part of the championship. Well, for us there is an additional challenge, that of demonstrating that we know how to make each tire work in the best way. After all, the tires are the same for everyone and it is useless to discuss whether the choice of compound pairing is favorable to one or the other: it is up to the teams to know how to adapt and improve the single-seater also to exploit the tyres, both as pure performance and durability.
