The Spaniard expects a close race

Alonso: “Something went wrong but I'm confident”

Disappointing qualification for Fernando Alonso and Ferrari at the Belgian F1 GP. The Spaniard did not go beyond ninth position on the grid but expects to recover in the race.

“When you finish in ninth and tenth position, something certainly didn't go right and only data analysis will be able to tell us what, also because the car was more competitive than in the last races and this also thanks to the innovations introduced here, on which we started to work in mid-July when we understood what our problems were" commented Alonso.

“Certainly bad luck had its weight, because if the cloud that appeared in Q3 had not moved just before the timed time expired, perhaps those who were last in the standings at that moment would not have been able to improve. In the final heat I spun on the first lap, a mistake that certainly cost me a lot, even though on the following lap at the same point – in turn 14 – I had already recovered three seconds. I feel quite confident about the race, especially because with such variable weather conditions, anything can happen and it doesn't mean that it ends the way it starts. We certainly have to recover many positions, but at least we have the certainty of having closed the gap on the favorites and of being able to be competitive both in the dry - as seen in Q2 - and in mixed conditions - as in Q1. Only the rain remains a big unknown because in recent days we have never ridden on a track that was wet for the entire length" concluded Alonso.
