Alonso: “There was no point in lapping, better to keep the tyres”

"The accident at the end of FP2? It was due to aquaplaning"

The Ferrari driver comments on a Friday that said little or nothing about the values of the cars and hopes that the mechanics can repair the nose damaged when it went off the track
Alonso: “There was no point in lapping, better to keep the tyres”

Fernando Alonso says he is very perplexed after the first day of free practice at the British GP.

Ferrari was able to test very little, only 18 laps for him, six of which were timed in which he achieved the 10th time in FP2: he explains that there was no point in taking risks and ruining the tyres, but he has no idea of the values that will be seen in qualifying and race. “I can say very little this afternoon, let's say even less than usual on Friday”, the Spaniard commented jokingly. “We did very few laps due to the rain and the fact that, with a set of wet tires limited by the regulations, it made no sense to lap. Rather, it is better to keep the tyres, also because the forecast is certainly not encouraging: it is expected to rain all weekend. In other circumstances, with perhaps a dry weekend, we could have lapped more but in these conditions, as I said before, that wasn't really the case."

Alonso had won in similar circumstances in Malaysia, but the English cold of what seems like an early autumn makes it impossible to evaluate the real performance of the cars: “The car seemed fine in the wet but it was practically impossible to tell where we were in relation to the others. Tomorrow morning we hope to at least be able to do a few laps in the dry to get at least a rough idea of the behavior of the Soft and Hard tires, the compounds brought here by Pirelli". Alonso was also involved in an accident at the end of the session, a spin caused by the intermediate tires which ended with the nose impacting the barriers on the right of the track. The Asturian comments on it like this: “The going off track at the end? There was aquaplaning and the car skidded away. It's a shame about the front wing, now we'll see if we can repair it", concluded the Ferrari driver.
