Alonso: “Fifth place is the position we deserve”
Third row in qualifying in Melbourne for the Ferrari Spaniard
Fernando Alonso is realistic at the end of qualifying for the Australian GP, held in the rain, which ended with fifth position on the grid. Lewis Hamilton took pole ahead of Daniel Ricciardo's Red Bull and Nico Rosberg's other Mercedes. Also ahead of Alonso is the McLaren of rookie Kevin Magnussen.
“The car doesn't change much from wet to dry so everything was more or less OK” commented Alonso in response to those who asked him if he had adopted a set-up more oriented towards the dry.
“It was a very difficult qualifying, I passed in Q1 then it started raining” said Alonso. “In Q2 we managed to exploit the track and in Q3 it was tough. In the dry we wouldn't have done much better given the level of the Mercedes up front and with the inclusion of the Red Bull. So fifth is the position we deserve. In the race, consumption will play a role, the podium is feasible but the main objective will be to finish the race."
